What "Low-E" Actually Means
Low-E stands for low emissivity — a measure of how much radiant heat a surface reflects rather than absorbs and re-emits. In a double-glazed window, one of the internal glass surfaces (sealed inside the unit, between the two panes) carries a microscopically thin, transparent metallic coating. You can't see it or feel it. What it does is change how that pane interacts with heat.
How the Coating Actually Works
Think of the Low-E coating as a one-way mirror for heat rather than light. Visible light passes through the glass largely unaffected, which is why a Low-E window looks and feels like ordinary clear glass. Radiant heat, however, behaves differently — the coating reflects it rather than letting it pass through.
In winter, that means the heat your home generates indoors gets reflected back into the room instead of radiating out through the glass. In summer, the same coating reflects a good portion of the sun's radiant heat before it ever gets inside. It's the same coating doing both jobs, just working in whichever direction the heat is trying to travel.
This sits on top of the insulation benefit you already get from double glazing itself — the sealed, argon-filled gap between the two panes is a poor conductor of heat, which slows down heat transfer independently of the coating. Low-E and the gas-filled gap work together, not as substitutes for each other.
What This Means in Practice
- Lower heating and cooling reliance — less radiant heat escaping in winter and less coming in during summer means your heating and cooling system isn't fighting the glass as much.
- Reduced condensation — because the coating helps keep the interior pane closer to room temperature, you get less of the cold-glass condensation that shows up on single-glazed windows on frosty mornings.
- Some UV reduction — the coating reflects a portion of UV radiation as well as heat, which helps slow fading in carpets, curtains and furniture near the window, though it isn't a complete UV block on its own.
Does Every Glass Option Get a Low-E Coating?
