1. A More Even Temperature, Year-Round

Single glass offers almost no resistance to heat moving through it — which is why an old sash window can feel like a hole in the wall on a cold morning. Retrofitting a sealed, gas-filled insulated glass unit (IGU) into your existing frame changes that dramatically. Our standard Optitherm® Low-E spec brings the U-value down to around 1.4, compared to roughly 5.8 for the single glass it replaces — meaning far less heat escaping in winter and far less radiant heat getting in over summer.

2. Lower Heating and Cooling Bills

A more stable indoor temperature means your heating and cooling system isn't working as hard to compensate for what's escaping through the glass. Over a full winter and summer, that adds up — particularly in an older home where the windows are often the single weakest point in the building's thermal envelope.

3. A Noticeable Reduction in Noise

Double glazing does take some of the edge off street noise, barking dogs, and general outside chatter, simply from having two panes and a sealed gap rather than one. 4. Less Condensation on Cold Mornings

Condensation forms when warm indoor air meets a cold pane of glass — and single glazing gets cold fast. Because the Low-E coating and gas-filled gap keep the interior pane closer to room temperature, retrofitted windows fog up far less on cold mornings, which also means less risk of the timber sill and frame absorbing moisture over time.

5. UV Protection for Your Home — and the People In It

Our Low-E coating reflects a portion of UV radiation along with heat, which helps slow the sun-fading that shows up on floorboards, rugs and furniture near a north or west-facing window over the years. It isn't a complete UV block on its own, but it's a genuine improvement over standard single glazing. If UV protection is the priority for a particular room, our laminated acoustic glass option goes considerably further — the plastic interlayer bonding its two panes together absorbs UV radiation directly, and laminated glass built this way is generally understood to block up to around 99% of it, well beyond what standard glazing achieves. That also matters for anyone who spends a lot of time near a large window or glass door — a home office desk, a sunroom, a spot by the sliding door — since it meaningfully cuts the cumulative UV exposure that glass alone would otherwise let through.

6. You Keep the Windows That Give the Home Its Character

This is the one that actually separates retrofit from every other option on the market. Full frame replacement means your original timber joinery — the proportions, the glazing bars, the sightlines — is gone for good. That matters whether the home is heritage-listed or not; plenty of older homes with original timber windows aren't under any formal overlay, but the windows are still part of what makes the place feel right. Retrofitting upgrades only the glass. From the street, the window looks exactly as it always has; from inside, it performs like a modern double-glazed unit.

7. Less Energy Use, Less Landfill

The environmental case for retrofitting is actually two separate things, and both are real. First, a better-insulated home simply draws less energy for heating and cooling over its lifetime — the same U-value improvement behind the comfort and bill savings above is also a genuine reduction in energy consumption. Second, and less talked about: retrofitting keeps your original timber frame in place and only replaces the glass, rather than pulling out the entire window — sash, frame and all — and sending it to landfill the way a full frame replacement does. For a whole-house job, that's a meaningful amount of timber, glass and hardware that simply doesn't end up in a skip bin.

8. A Genuine Security Improvement

Our standard IGU spec pairs a Low-E pane with a 4mm clear toughened glass pane, not standard float glass. Toughened glass is manufactured through a heating and rapid-cooling process that makes it several times stronger than ordinary float glass of the same thickness — it takes considerably more force to break. When it does fail, it breaks into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards, which is why it's also classed as a safety glass. Combined with the fact that there are now two full panes to get through instead of one old single-glazed sash, that's a real, specific security improvement — not just a talking point.
